Don't be uncessarily active: Govt tells foreign diplomats

22 Jan 2015, Kathmandu - Foreign MinisterMahendra Pandey has urged the Kathmandu-based foreign diplomatic missions to not become unnecessarily active in Nepal’s internal affairs.
At a programme in the Capital on Thursday, Minister Pandey noted that diplomacy was a sensitive issue and called on the foreign diplomats to comply with diplomatic code.
Saying that newspaper articles and opinions on internal issues carry deeper meaning and non-
diplomatic meetings would have impact on the nation’s internal matters, Minister Pandey said the diplomatic community needs to be aware and maintain non-involvement.
He said the government’s serious attention has been drawn towards some foreign diplomats’ hobnobbing with the forces bent on ruining the national sovereignty and integrity. He said the government is aware of the activities of someforeign countries in encourging such forces and would take an apt decision at the right time.
He warned the diplomatic missions of European countries without specifying the country saying that the government has been scrutinising the activities of diplomatic missions.
“This programme is aimed at clearing the air that everyone is concerned about Nepal’s peaceprocess and constitution writing,” said Finance Minister Ram Sharan Mahat, responding to a query if addressing the diplomats would invite intervention at a time when rumors of foreign interference are making rounds.  “It was the need of the time.”
